The 4 Parts of Medicare—Simplified
Medicare is made up of different parts, each covering specific healthcare needs:
Medicare Part A (Hospital Coverage)
Covers inpatient hospital stays, skilled nursing care, hospice, and some home health services.
Medicare Part B (Medical Coverage)
Covers doctor visits, outpatient care, preventive services, and medical equipment.
Medicare Part C (Medicare Advantage)
An alternative to Original Medicare that bundles hospital, medical, and often prescription coverage into one plan.
Medicare Part D (Prescription Drug Coverage)
Helps cover the cost of medications and varies by plan.
When Can I Enroll?
Annual Election Period (AEP)
October 15 – December 7 each year
During this time, Medicare beneficiaries can review their healthcare needs, explore new plan options, and make changes to their Medicare Advantage (Part C) or Medicare prescription drug (Part D) plans. Any changes made during the AEP will take effect on January 1 of the following year.
Medicare Advantage Open Enrollment Period (OEP)
January 1- March 31
During this time beneficiaries enrolled in a Medicare Advantage (MA) Plan can elect to change to a new MA plan or disenroll in MA and go back to Original Medicare and enroll in a Standalone Prescription Drug plan. This timeframe does NOT allow for guaranteed issue enrollment into a Medicare Supplement/Medigap Policy.
Special Enrollment Period
January 1- November 31 and ongoing throughout the year based on individual circumstances.
May include things such as retirement (leaving employer coverage), moving out of your current plans service area, qualifying for a government assistance program, etc.
Choosing the Right Medicare Path
Once you're enrolled in Medicare, you’ll typically choose between two main paths:
Option 1: Original Medicare + Supplement (Medigap)
Greater flexibility in choosing doctors.
Helps cover out-of-pocket costs like deductibles and coinsurance.
Requires a separate Part D drug plan.
Option 2: Medicare Advantage Plans
All-in-one bundled coverage.
Often includes prescription drugs and extra benefits.
Network-based plans (HMO or PPO).
The right choice depends on your health needs, preferred doctors, medications, and budget. That’s where personalized guidance makes all the difference.
